Your High Definition Television and HDTV Service Providers

The new HDTV LCD and HDTV plasma TVs are making many of us review our TV viewing options or perhaps our HDTV viewing options.

With the non tube based television set becoming much more affordable over the last couple of years the demand has increased and then so has the size of these flat LCD or plasma screens. The most popular sizes are now almost certainly in the 40 to 50 inch bracket. Now that the screens are so much larger we need the high definition to provide a suitable picture quality. High Definition TV provides in the order of 5 times more information on a screen than the conventional picture prior to HDTV. If however you consider that, for example, a 48 inch screen is approximately 2 and half times the area of a 32 inch set you soon see where the pixels went.

That's a little background about the hardware or the HDTV set but more than anything we now have an increasing number of alternative methods of receiving the HD programs.

Your High Definition Television and HDTV Service Providers

Some alternatives and considerations.

1. If you have just taken deliver of your new HDTV then you may not be aware that you existing aerial or antenna may not work properly. This may not be a concern because you have cable or satellite television installed. You can, however, in many cases receive a number of HD programs via the airwaves and free of charge if you just change to an HDTV antenna or HDTV aerial.

2. You can have HD programs delivered by cable though this is generally regarded as a poor option. If however you live in a location where your cable provides all the options you want at a good price then I am sure you would be happy cable customer.

3. HDTV by satellite is becoming very popular. The big plus point for satellite HDTV is the availability and quality. Every part of the picture delivery is digital and hence there is no loss of quality (even if it has travelled 40 to 50 thousand miles on a round trip to a geo-stationary satellite). The best HDTV programs are nearly always transmitted via satellite. It is also easy for a company like Dish Network to receive satellite transmissions from other parts of the world and package these same programs into a package of your choice with your dish TV service. Dishnetwork currently provide services in 20 different languages as follows - Arabic, Armenian, Chinese, France, German, Greek, Israeli, Italian, Japan, Korean, Latino, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, South Asian, Tagalog, Urdu, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese. If for example you wanted Polish Satellite TV programs then you'd be able to choose from a number of packages available from dish which include several Polish channels such as Kino Polska, Polsat2, TVN-24 and more.

4. There are 2 computer based options to consider and these broadly fall into 2 categories namely Software based products and hardware based products. There have been a number of manufactures providing HD support on graphics cards but cards providing access to HD quality programs are just becoming available. There are several suppliers of software based products that will enable you to access up to 4,000 channels for a relatively small one off fee. PC to TV or PC to Satellite TV are two of the popular vendors. This is a great way to access your favourite programs from across the world. If you live in the US and want access to Vietnamese satellite TV than you can. Equally you could be in Vietnam and have access to you favourite programs in the US.

With the huge developments in technology it always make sense to conduct your own HDTV research and take a look at some HDTV reviews or just the product specifications of HDTV products.

Whatever your choice of delivery system do enjoy your HDTV viewing.

Plasma Vs LCD TV and Ambient Light

Until not to long ago, ambient light was the main argument you had in choosing LCD over plasma. With today's models, though it remains a factor that helps you decide which technology to choose, it is not as decisive as it was before. The light can affect the picture quality in two ways.

First of all, if the screen material is highly reflective a lot of light will bounce from it. In a real life scenario this happens in a sunny day when a lot of sunlight enters the window and hits the screen from an angle that makes it reflect directly into your eyes. In this situation the screen acts as a mirror and instead of seeing what it is displayed on the screen you see that annoying light that reflects from it. This happens because the amount of sunlight that hits the screen and bounces from it is much higher than the amount of light the screen produces. Depending on how reflective the screen is and the angle from which the sunlight comes, this effect can be more or less disturbing. Same effect appears from other powerful light sources - like your light bulbs - but it is less disturbing. In most cases the light from light bulbs is very weak compared to sunlight so this effect is either invisible or almost unnoticeable.

The second way in which light affects the picture quality has to do with your eyes not the TV. Your eyes are built in such way that they adapt to the amount of light around. When you watch TV in a dark room, most if not all light that enters your eyes is coming from the TV. In a well lit room a lot of the light that your eyes capture is ambient light coming from the window, light bulbs or reflected by the walls and objects in the room. In this situation your eyes get more light from the environment and less from the TV itself. So when you watch TV in darkness the picture quality looks better because your eyes capture all the light from the TV and you perceive a better contrast, luminosity and saturation - which are the most important factors that affect picture quality. When you watch TV in a well lit room the ambient light will overlap with the TV light and it will make it look more washed and the colors will be less intense.

Plasma Vs LCD TV and Ambient Light

Generally Plasma TV screens are more reflective than LCD screens. At the same time, a plasma TV tends to offer better picture quality than LCD TVs in an environment with controlled lighting (a dark room). Because of these characteristics of plasma and LCD TV, they are recommended generally for different situations - plasma TVs for people who watch TV with lights turned off or dimmed and LCD TV for people who watch TV during daytime and have a lot of light in the room. If you have an averagely lit room then both TVs perform similarly.

There are exceptions however. Technology is evolving and plasma TVs now have an ace in their sleeve. To find out what is the plasma TV feature that makes them perform in a well lit room at a level comparable with LCD, follow the link titled Plasma vs LCD TV at the bottom of this page. The guide you will reach through that link has much more useful information about plasma vs LCD TV subject and can be a very useful resource if you want to understand which is the best HDTV for your particular needs.

40 Inch OLED HDTV - Why I Want it and How Long Do I Have to Wait?

OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) have been in the media for a while now and for good reason. They promise some significant advantages over current LCD and Plasma HDTV displays.

So what are the advantages of OLED displays?

Very Bright Display - OLED pixels emit light directly as opposed to LCDs which filter a backlight. OLED peak luminance is 600 cd/m2 (Samsung) vs 450 cd/m2 for LCD Wider Viewing Angle- there is no color shift of dimming at even extreme angles. Superb Contrast - contrast ratio is a large determinant of picture quality and OLED displays have huge contrast ratios (1,000,000:1) for great detail in even the darkest scenes Deep Blacks - OLED displays do not require a backlight which delivers very deep blacks. Wide Color Range - for more lifelike images (color gamut of 107% NTSC - Samsung) Faster Response Time - is essential for accurate reproduction of fast onscreen action (sports or gaming) without blurring. OLED can have a response time of less than 0.01 ms compared to a "fast" LCD speed of 4 ms. Thin and Light Weight - OLEDs are an order of magnitude thinner (one third of LCD) and lighter (about 40 percent) than current LCD and Plasma displays. OLED = Portable. Low Power Consumption - OLEDs are more efficient, environmentally friendly and far cheaper to run (about half of LCD). Flexibility - it's possible to have specially formed displays for special purposes (think roll-up displays for cell phones)
So why are there no large OLED HDTVs on the shelves yet?
Manufacturing costs are still higher (about 2x) than for LCD and Plasma HDTVs. Manufacturers won't be offering products until they are certain the public will be willing to pay the price for an OLED. LCD manufacturing plants required a heavy investment which needs to be repaid. It takes time to make a switch to a new technology (OLED) with very different manufacturing requirements. Achieving a satisfactory life time (durability) for OLED has been a challenge for manufacturers - particularly for larger displays and for the color blue. Uniformity of the picture display over time is a significant problem. Sony's XEL-1 has a rated life span of about 30,000hrs (you will likely notice picture degradation before this though) which is about half that for an LCD HDTV. Improved sealing of displays is required as water ingress can damage or destroy OLCD (organic) materials. The global financial meltdown.
When am I likely to be able to purchase a 40 inch OLED HDTV?

40 Inch OLED HDTV - Why I Want it and How Long Do I Have to Wait?

Sony actually began to sell limited numbers of their first OLED TV, the 11 inch XEL-1, in November 2007 for some ,500 each.

It's expected that Panasonic may have a 37 inch OLED HDTV on sale some time in the next three years.

In October 2008 Samsung revealed the largest (40 inch) Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels) OLED HDTV so far. Samsung have stated, unfortunately, that they only have assembly lines capable of producing OLED HDTVs up to 31 inches at the moment. Samsung haven't committed to a date when a 40 inch HDTV will be available commercially, believing OLED has some technology and cost hurdles to jump yet. 2011 might be a reasonable expectation.

The Difference Between LEDs, LCDs, Plasmas, 3D TVs and Rear Projections

The Different Type of TVs You Can Buy

Plasma- Plasmas are still some of the most expensive models on the market. They have high refresh rates and produce an amazing black level performance giving you a very realistic picture quality. Even though they produce a nice picture, it uses a lot of energy and won't necessarily have the best picture in a bright room.

LCD- In recent years these have become the most common televisions on the market. They came out as a cheaper alternative to the Plasma and while they don't produce as good of a picture quality as a plasma, it still comes out with a great picture that everyone can enjoy. It has similar problems with the bright rooms but requires a lot less energy consumption and comes with a much smaller price tag.

The Difference Between LEDs, LCDs, Plasmas, 3D TVs and Rear Projections

LED- LED televisions use much less energy and have ultra slim models. They are great for anyone looking to find a less conspicuous television in their house. However, their slimmer size comes with a higher price tag and their picture isn't very different from the less expensive LCD.

3D- 3D televisions are the newest TVs to hit the market and might leave consumers more confused than they already were about which TV to buy. These televisions have high refresh rates and give you a picture in 3 dimensions and are much better than those 3D pictures you used to see with those plastic glasses. Their still going to be working to improve the kinks in these televisions and they aren't as expensive as you might assume. The real extra costs come with having to purchase special glasses depending on which brand of TV you buy, you can't use another brand of glasses with an opposing brand yet. Also, there aren't a lot of viewing options. There are only a few Blu rays available (you will have to buy one that is compatible with 3D and there are even fewer options on TV. However, many stations like ESPN have promised to deliver stations that are 3D all the time in the near future.

Rear Projection- When you think of a big screen TV this is probably what you are imagining. These are big, and generally bulky TVs that can be well over 60 inches. Anyone searching for the biggest TV they can for the lowest price they can, will love having one of these. Just make sure you have a space in your house that it fits in because you won't be hanging one of these on the wall.
