HDTV Technology - Should I Get a 1080p or 720p HDTV?








As you search for the perfect HDTV, you'll come across dozens of different terms that explain different types of technology, different styles of display and different levels of quality. One term that you will need to be familiar with is the screen resolution. An HDTV picture is made up of many small dots, or "pixels", and the amount of pixels that are used to make the picture is referred to as the resolution. In general, the more pixels, the better, and since an HDTV has more pixels than a regular TV, that's one of the things that makes it better.

There are two different levels of resolution commonly used in modern HDTVs. The lower one is called "720p", which means that there are 720 rows of pixels and it's a progressive display. In a typical widescreen HDTV, each row has 1280 pixels. The higher resolution, 1080p, means 1080 rows of pixels, usually with 1920 pixels per row.

What, you may ask, is a progressive display? In a progressive display, 30 times a second, the screen shows the full picture, then erases it to make room for the next frame. The other way to show a picture is with an "integrated display". That's where the TV draws the even rows of the picture on the screen, then the odd rows, then the even rows of the next frame, and so on. This technique has been used in regular TV sets for decades, because it takes about half as much effort and looks almost as good as a progressive display. Now that we have better technology, though, we can make every HDTV with a progressive display and bring picture quality up to the highest possible level. TV shows are still usually broadcast in an integrated format because it takes less bandwidth, but an HDTV will always "de-interlace" these shows to display progressively onscreen.

HDTV Technology - Should I Get a 1080p or 720p HDTV?

If you want to get a really big HDTV, you'll want to seriously consider 1080p resolution. In any set larger than 50 inches, a lower resolution will look choppy, since you'll be able to see individual pixels.

So, it would seem that 1080p is clearly better, and 720p is not really worth considering. But, there are actually some good reasons to choose 720p over 1080p:

Input source.

You will only get the full benefit of a 1080p HDTV if you are watching 1080p content. Almost all TV broadcasts are still in 720p or 1080i, so a 720p set will handle them fine.

Screen size.

If the screen size is smaller than 50 inches, it will be very hard to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p. At a normal viewing distance, they will look essentially the same.

Cost.

A 1080p set will almost always cost more than a similar set built with 720p resolution. If you can't see much difference in picture quality, why spend more?

Other factors.

When looking at the big picture in your HDTV purchase, the screen resolution is only one factor. Contrast ratio, black level, likelihood of problems and even customer service can all be more important factors than screen resolution. Don't let one exciting feature convince you to buy an inferior set.

The best way to get that big picture is to do research on the internet, look at HDTV reviews, see the sets in person if possible, and think about the factors that are really important to you. Using an online HDTV tutorial can also help point you in the right direction.

Before you spend in excess of 00, you need to cut through the jargon and hype to truly understand the technology that you're actually spending your hard earned money on. But which one is really better? Is it a win for the Plasma TV or the LCD TV? Their prices may be close but features can be really far different from each other.

They actually have really different technologies. The answer to which one is better will depend mostly on how the consumers plan to use the unit.

Screen Burn in Plasma TV Technology








Screen burn-in is quite common in plasma TVs since they are phosphor based display systems. This is because, the physical properties of the phosphors tend to get affected by attributes such as light and electric impulse. As a result of this, plasma TVs are extremely sensitive to image retention. This problem occurs due to an uneven wear of the phosphors in the display and can very much distort the pictures. Screen burn-in in a plasma TV screen will make the areas of the screen that are lighted the least appear brighter when compared to the parts that actually displayed a bright image. The result of this is an apparent after-image.

So, pictures have to be viewed with a lot of strain and a great deal of attention as the original image tends to get overridden by the burn-in. LED TV Technology








LED stands for Light-Emitting Diode and contrary to what a lot of people think, it is not a new TV technology. It is simply another way to light the LCD - Liquid Crystal Display. A liquid crystal display is a glass that works by controlling the capacity of its segments (pixels) by varying the electrical signal. Each segment (pixel) acts as a shutter to control the amount of light being passed through. The fundamental difference between an LCD TV technology and an LED TV technology is the source of light that pass through these pixels.

On LCD TV displays, fluorescent lights are used to back-light screens. LCD TVs use a Cold-Cathode Flourescent Lamp (CCFL), which are lamps that can, and are used by some people to light their homes. To back-light a television, a series of these lights are horizontally laid across the back of the television. The light is distributed evenly onto the glass panel by a plastic sheet placed in front of the light and for the most part, produces a clear image on your screen. However, creating a true black picture is often difficult with the LCD technology. This is because to darken a screen the light source must be blocked out, and with LCD, the light is continuously on. Manufacturers get through this by blocking out the light source with a screen is darkened, but with most televisions, the light bleeds through, hence never allows for a true-black image.

LED TV technology on the other hand use tubes (LEDs) which are smaller than CCFL tube to produce the light. There are two styles of LED lighting - edge and direct mount.

Edge lighting arranges the LEDs along the edge of the television panel. As a result of the tubes being mounted on the edge of the television, the television can be created much thinner. The ultra thin TV sets displayed in shops use this type of lighting technology. LED light is channelled behind the television glass, with the light being spread evenly by guides.

Direct lit LEDs are tubes placed behind the television glass. The amount of LEDs placed depends on the size of the television with as many as 1500 LEDS. A single LED can be responsible for lighting up 1400 pixels on your screen. The main advantage of direct lit LEDs is that if an area of your screen is dark, the LEDs can be turned off thereby increasing the contrast. This is also known as local dimming, which LCDs cannot perform.

There are two types of direct lit LEDs - White and RGB (red, green, blue). White LEDs are similar to CCFLs in that they produce white light. RGB LEDs use the three colours, which makes the television capable of a broader range colour.

The debate of which is better out of LCD and LED TV technology continues, and the debate on what type of LED tube is best is an even bigger debate. Opinion, in this case, very much rules!

3D Enabled TV Systems Thanks to DLP Technology







Back in 2007 Texas Instruments introduced to the industry the very first 3D capable solutions. They had successfully utilized the most recent advances made in 3d shutter glasses along with the speed gained from DMD (digital micro mirror device) technology which enabled an enhanced stereoscopic imaging needed for right / left viewing.
