No doubt about it, flat screen HDTVs have gone from being tvs for the enthusiast and the wealthy to the natural replacement choice for the common household. A popular question is which is better, an LCD flat screen tv or a plasma tv?
In years past this would be a much easier answer as there were clear differences between the two tv options, with a plasma tv being the natural flat panel choice for a home theater due in part to the limited size options for large screen tvs.
In today's rapidly changing electronics market LCD screens have gained significant ground in the home theater market. They are now a legitimate option for home theater and not just an option for small tvs or computer monitors. They have gained production efficiency allowing the cost to drop rapidly. They have made significant quality improvements and have made a major push into the full HD 1080p tv market. With all of the momentum of LCDs some have gone so far as to ask the question, is plasma dead?
Plasma TV - The Case For Choosing Plasma TV over LCD Flat Screen TVAlthough the gap has certainly narrowed, plasma tv is still a very viable option for today's home theater. For flat panel screen sizes of 50" and up plasma still is a great choice. The cost of flat panel tvs, including plasma tvs has continued to drop making it an affordable option for most consumers. Dollar for dollar plasma is still tough to beat for screen sizes in this range.
Many will argue that the quality of the picture of a plasma surpasses that of the comparably priced LCD tv. It produces a crisp, smooth picture without the "ghosting" effect associated with early LCD screens, particularly in scenes with fast movement such as sports.
Plasma tv technology produces lifelike, rich and vibrant colors. Another important consideration is black levels. Although LCD has made advancements in black level, they still have a tough time reproducing the deep true blacks that plasma can produce.
Keep in mind the viewing environment when purchasing a tv. LCDs generally produce a brighter picture that is great for areas with a lot of natural ambient light. This is one reason that when you go in to the typical electronics store that is filled with bright fluorescent lighting, that they will stand out more then plasmas. You may be surprised at the difference in perceived picture quality when viewing a plasma in areas with controlled lighting such as a home theater room or a basement den.
A major drawback in early plasma tv technology was the "burn in" effect that could occur when bright, static images such as a stock ticker tape or video game score would be displayed for long periods on the screen. Today's plasmas have all but eliminated the threat of screen burn in through various technological advances.
While many plasma tvs have a native 720p resolution, they are now offering 1080p full hd models to more directly compete with full HD LCD flat screen models.
While recent gains in LCD technology and new technologies on the horizon such as OLED may eventually threaten plasma tv, it still has a lot to offer in today's market. In fact if you are currently in the market for buying a new flat screen tv, then a plasma tv may be the perfect addition to your home theater.

The traditional rule for the maximum size of TV screen that can be used in any room is to have a screen around four times smaller than the distance of the average viewer from the TV. So, if a viewer is 12 feet (144 inches) away, a screen size of about 36 inches could be accommodated.
However a high definition screen, has a much higher resolution and therefore enables a viewer to sit much closer to the set. There is some evidence on the internet within TV reviews and blogs that many regret that the size of their new TV is much too small within a few weeks of getting it.
Here are some new guidelines of the minimum distance to be maintained to cater for the maximum size of the HDTV:
What Size of HDTV Screen to Buy?Maximum screen size of HDTV... Viewing Distance
32 inches... 48 inches
46 inches... 72 inches
63 inches... 96 inches
112 inches... 168 inches
Another rule of thumb is to sit in the nearest chair or sofa and place a wide object in the space where you intend to have your new TV. Then ask a friend or relative to mark the right and left extremities of the area you can view without moving your head or your eyes. That width of screen size should generally work well for a HDTV.
Of course many transmissions are not yet in HDTV format, so the compromise answer may well be to choose a one somewhere between the larger sizes that the new rules will throw up and the old one of up about 4 times smaller than the distance between the viewer and the set.

Screen burn-in is quite common in plasma TVs since they are phosphor based display systems. This is because, the physical properties of the phosphors tend to get affected by attributes such as light and electric impulse. As a result of this, plasma TVs are extremely sensitive to image retention. This problem occurs due to an uneven wear of the phosphors in the display and can very much distort the pictures. Screen burn-in in a plasma TV screen will make the areas of the screen that are lighted the least appear brighter when compared to the parts that actually displayed a bright image. The result of this is an apparent after-image.
So, pictures have to be viewed with a lot of strain and a great deal of attention as the original image tends to get overridden by the burn-in. When one is watching action movies or playing high definition video games wherein certain images are stationary for quite some time, the first image in the sequence gets burnt-in leaving the images that follow glazed over.
If an image is displayed in the screen for a long period of time, the pixels tend to get burnt in to the screen, which makes them deprived of their visual effects as well as originality. Therefore, one should switch off the TV's power when not in use. During non-operation, the pixels of a plasma TV will not work, thus preventing the burn-in effect. This way, you can also extend the life of the appliance.
Screen Burn in Plasma TV TechnologyIt's true that screen burn-in problems were known to have affected the performance of plasma TVs to a great extent in the past. But the issue is becoming less of a problem in the more recent models as manufacturers have developed a lot of new technologies that deal with the problem effectively. For example, the 'motion-adaptive technique' shifts all the pixels to the minutest of degrees such that screen burn-in is prevented significantly. Certain top manufacturers also make use of 'grey masking' to combat burn-in issues.
Some plasma TVs come with 'white screen' options, which can get rid of screen burn-in problems to a certain extent. There are a variety of other features also, which when efficiently controlled can reduce burning in effects as well as result in high quality images. For example, if the TV's contrast and brightness are reduced when the set is new, it can do us good in two ways - the pictures will be enhanced and the pixels will work far better. You can also turn on the screen saver feature of your DVD player, switch channels constantly and avoid continuous viewing of programmes that constantly display non-transparent logos to save your precious plasma TV from screen burn-in issues.

Picking the right sized Big Screen TV for your needs can't be boiled down to a simple formula. There are many things to consider before you're ready to make a purchase.
How large is the space in your living room where the flat screen TV will go? Is there room around the TV for ventilation and Dolby Surround Sound speakers? How much do you want to spend? How far away will the viewers be sitting?
You'll also want to know if a Home Theater System fit in the room. Would you have more space if you install a wall mount instead of a TV stand? Do you want to buy a discount or high end Big Screen TV? And most importantly, how jealous will the neighbors will be?
Flat Screen TV - How Big Is Big?o Measure the space where you plan to install the TV. Subtract one foot from the resulting measurement to allow for the frame and ventilation space. This will give you a rough idea of what sized Plasma TV will fit in the space (a five foot long space is needed for a 50" TV).
o Big Screen TV screens are measured diagonally like all TV screens. The most popular screen sizes are 42-inch and 50-inch, although many sizes are available between 32-inch and 108-inch. Because TV screens are measured diagonally; a 50" screen will have a horizontal measurement somewhat shorter than 50".
o How high on the wall should your Plasma TV be mounted? A flat wall mount should be slightly above the viewer's eye level. The bottom of the screen should be no more than one foot higher than the eye level of a seated adult. A tilt mount can be installed much higher than that, over fireplaces and even on bedroom ceilings.
o A careful shopper can find a name brand 42-inch HDTV Flat Screen for around ,000, and a 50-inch for about ,000. You can spend much more, but the price of Plasma, LCD and DLP TVs has dropped significantly in recent months.
(If you're not familiar with some of the terms used above: HDTV, Plasma, LCD and DLP, you should Google the "123 Guide To Plasma TV.com")
o A wall mount takes up much less space than a TV stand. Flat Screen TVs are less than 4 inches thick, a flat wall mount adds 2 inches and a tilt mount 4-6 inches. A TV stand can require space varying between 6 inches and 10 inches.
o The Size of Table Stands vary with the style and make. Plan on a table or base with at least 12 inches in depth and a minimum width 6 inches longer than the bottom of the table stand.
o How much viewing space is available in the room? The comfortable viewing distance for smaller Big Screen TVs is 6 to 10 feet; the largest plasmas can be easily viewed from 6 to 20 feet away.
o Consider the space needed for all the accessories your Big Screen TV will require; a TV stand (or wall mount) , a home entertainment system with speakers, a digital cable box and an HD-DVD player.
o Last, but not least, how jealous will the neighbors be when they see your new 50-inch Plasma?
Only you can decide what size Flat Screen TV you want to purchase for your family. Do a little planning, make informed choices, and you'll be much happier with your new Big Screen TV!
It's as easy as 1 2 3!

Another year, another Vizio monster screen, but this time it comes in the shape of a gargantuan 72-inch 3D flat screen TV. Last year's top model was the 55-inch back-lit XVT, complete with Wi-Fi, that came in at a very competitive K. Well fast forward 12 months this years offering with it's high-tech, high-spec and a whole 72 inches of LCD panel may well prove to be the most tempting 3d TV system.
The top of the Vizio XVT range, due out in August, will sport wireless HD along with Vizio's Internet applications widget platform and wireless-N all packed behind an impressive 72 inches of flicker free, 480HZ, 3d enabled, LCD and all for an amazing .5K.
For anyone with a smaller budget or apartment room then Vizio offer alternative 47 and 55 inch models. These have identical features including the 3d capability and in addition will sport a new anti-reflective to reduce that annoying glare when the lighting is not perfect. The 47 inch version will be priced circa K with the 55 inch going out at .5K. For some reason the company have not slotted a 60 something inch version in there, perhaps a decision they will rue in the future as I do think they might have missed out given the price point they have come in at with their range and the huge gap between the 55 and 72 inch models (and prices).
Vizio XVT 3D TV System - 72 Inches of 3D Flat Screen TVAll three models will benefit from 3D displays with Sensio technology and those all important 3d LCD glasses are the latest offering from XpanD, the all singing, all dancing bluetooth synchronized active shutter type. A wireless HDMI adapter can be purchased separately, it has 4 HDMI inputs that will use the 60ghz band to blast HD signals out.
It may take a while to get use to it but it looks very much like this time around 3D is here to stay. Vizio have set a bench mark with the XVT 3d TV system range. They may not win any design awards but as far as large 3d flat screen TV goes, these prices will be very difficult to beat.

Choosing the right technology
Plasma and LCD TVs look the same, but they are not. Some features or options don't differ a lot, but these are the major differences:
Size
How to choose the best Flat screen TVIf you arfe looking for an extra large TV, go for a plasma. Plasma TVs are the current size champions, particularly when comparing TVs that consumers can easily purchase. LCDs are catching up in size with their developing technology, however, and may surpass Plasmas in the near future. This may be due to difficulties in producing glass large enough for larger plasmas.
Burn-ins
With the latest plasma technology, this is less of an issue than ever before. The Pixel Orbitor, for example, is a method of reducing burn-in used by plasma manufacturers. It requires no additional programing from the end user as some older burn-in prevention techniques did.
Note: If you plan to use a plasma for gaming, some games with permanent 'dashboards' may still cause some burn-in. If you will be using the television for display use only, go for an LCD. Plasmas are more likely to get burned-in pixels.
Miscellaneous
- LCD TVs are far less fragile than plasmas. This is also an advantage when the tv set has to be shipped or moved to a different location.
- LCD TVs are also much easier to install than plasma TVs.
- LCD TVs have a better performance at high altitudes.
- LCD TVs are often cheaper than plasma TVs. The difference in pricing is getting smaller, however.
Ofcourse, all this information is available all over the web. For a detailed comparison sheet, I recommend using Wikipedia's comparison sheet.
