Difference Between a Plasma TV and LCD TV








If you have recently started looking for a new TV, you know that choosing the right TV that meets your needs can be a difficult decision. Plasma TV and LCD TV are the two main choices in the TV market. Before you select one of these types of large, slim, and flat display TVs, it is important to understand the difference between the two so you do not regret your purchase.

Plasma TV

Plasma TV technology is loosely based on the fluorescent light bulb. Between the plates of glass there are very small cells where such gases as ionized neon, argon, and xenon are injected and preserved in plasma form. When the ionized (electrically charged) gas is in its sealed plasma form, they produce the colored images green, blue phosphors, and red. When the Plasma TV set is being used, the gas is electrically charged at specific intervals which then hit the colors (each group of red, green, and blue phosphors is called a pixel) and produces the image on the television. Plasma TV technology make use of the burning of phosphors to produce the image. Plasma TV advantages include: high quality image, better contrast ratio, color accuracy, and color saturation, the display of the color black is quite vivid, and viewers are able to clearly view the television image at different angles. Plasma TVs are available in a larger screen size than the LCD TVs. Plasma TV disadvantages include: screen burn of static images, excessive heat production, and the glass screens are fragile.

Difference Between a Plasma TV and LCD TV

LCD TV

LCD TVs use different technology than plasma televisions. LCD panels consist of 2 layers of clear material, which are polarized and then 'glued' together. One layer has been coated with a specific polymer that holds the individual liquid crystals. An electrical current passes through each crystal which permits the crystals to allow light in or block the light in order to produce and display the television images. LCD crystals require an external light source for the image to be created by the LCD so that it is visible to the person watching the television. LCD TVs are not as good at tracking motion as Plasma. They have poorer contrast ratio and individual pixels can burn out resulting in small, visible, black or white dots to appear on the screen. The big screen sizes are not as common as with the plasma. The advantages of LCD TVs include: less power is needed, less heat is needed and generated, they do not emit radiation, they have increased image brightness over plasma, perform better at higher altitudes, they are lighter in weight, and they have a longer display life.

For many people, it is essential that they have the right television. Plasma Vs LCD TV - What's the Difference?








Flat screen plasma and LCD TVs are more popular than ever with new models being released on an almost continuous basis. This is great because it means there are lots of makes and models to choose from; however all this choice can make buying a new flat screen TV quite complicated. There are a lot of people out there who want to know what the differences are between plasma and LCD TVs, and which one is best. Unfortunately there's no simple answer as to which one is best, it all depends on the individual consumer. However, there are a number of differences between the two technologies, so let's take a look at these so you know what to consider before deciding which type of TV to purchase.

Plasma TVs contain a special type of gas, which turns into plasma when an electric current is passed through it. In turn the plasma emits the light that makes up the picture. LCD TVs on the other hand are made up of thousands of cells containing liquid crystals which are then illuminated by fluorescent backlighting.

Plasma TVs became a firm favourite with consumers because of the relatively low price point. Plasma screens are relatively cheap to produce, which means that consumers are able to get very large screen displays for their money. Even though the prices of many LCD TVs are starting to drop now that manufacturing techniques are becoming more advanced, it is still the case that plasma screens are generally cheaper, especially for screen sizes over 32 inches.

Plasma Vs LCD TV - What's the Difference?

Both types of TV deliver picture quality that is far better than traditional CRT screens; however plasma screens tend to offer a much higher contrast, with very deep blacks and bright whites. Plasma screens also handle fast moving action really well due to the higher refresh rate - this means that you will hardly ever see motion blur on a plasma screen. LCD screens tend to have a lower contrast ratio meaning that colours don't appear quite as refined, and they also tend to suffer from motion blur as the refresh rate is lower. This is being addressed with the newer LCD screens, but there is still a slight noticeable difference.

Plasma screens tend to offer a better range of sizes - typically you can find plasma screens going up to a whopping 103 inches! LCDs tend to only go up to around 65 inches. However, the larger size comes at a cost as plasma screens tend to be thicker than LCD screens. A plasma TV is also likely to be around 10% heavier than a LCD TV of the same size, and will consume much more power.

The expected lifespan of each type of TV is different too. Typically you should expect your plasma TV to last for about 10-15 years, whereas a LCD TV would be expected to last for around 30 years

To summarise:
Plasma TVs: are generally cheaper, are available in sizes up to 103 inches, have a higher contrast for dynamic pictures, are thicker and heavier than LCD TVs, use more power and tend to have a shorter lifespan

LCD TVs: are generally more expensive, are available in sizes up to 65 inches, have a lower contrast ratio, are slimmer and lighter than plasma TVs, use less power and tend to last 2 to 3 times as long

So which type of TV should you buy? Well that really does depend on you. Some consumers prefer to buy LCD TVs for their slim casing and lightweight designs. Many also go for LCD because they are less power hungry and are therefore more environmentally friendly. Other consumers prefer plasma TVs for the large screen sizes and dynamic looking pictures. Both types of screen have their advantages and disadvantages, so it really is a matter of doing your research and deciding which screen type best meets your needs.

Plasma- Plasmas are still some of the most expensive models on the market. They have high refresh rates and produce an amazing black level performance giving you a very realistic picture quality. Even though they produce a nice picture, it uses a lot of energy and won't necessarily have the best picture in a bright room.

LCD- In recent years these have become the most common televisions on the market. They came out as a cheaper alternative to the Plasma and while they don't produce as good of a picture quality as a plasma, it still comes out with a great picture that everyone can enjoy. It has similar problems with the bright rooms but requires a lot less energy consumption and comes with a much smaller price tag.

The Difference Between LEDs, LCDs, Plasmas, 3D TVs and Rear Projections

LED- LED televisions use much less energy and have ultra slim models. They are great for anyone looking to find a less conspicuous television in their house. However, their slimmer size comes with a higher price tag and their picture isn't very different from the less expensive LCD.

3D- 3D televisions are the newest TVs to hit the market and might leave consumers more confused than they already were about which TV to buy. These televisions have high refresh rates and give you a picture in 3 dimensions and are much better than those 3D pictures you used to see with those plastic glasses. Their still going to be working to improve the kinks in these televisions and they aren't as expensive as you might assume. The real extra costs come with having to purchase special glasses depending on which brand of TV you buy, you can't use another brand of glasses with an opposing brand yet. Also, there aren't a lot of viewing options. There are only a few Blu rays available (you will have to buy one that is compatible with 3D and there are even fewer options on TV. However, many stations like ESPN have promised to deliver stations that are 3D all the time in the near future.

Rear Projection- When you think of a big screen TV this is probably what you are imagining. These are big, and generally bulky TVs that can be well over 60 inches. Anyone searching for the biggest TV they can for the lowest price they can, will love having one of these. Just make sure you have a space in your house that it fits in because you won't be hanging one of these on the wall.

Know the Difference Between LCD, Plasma, HDTV, LED, and OLED








There are many technologies emerging in display devices like TVs. Every technology excels in particular feature of display and has particular method of display. Different technologies used in TVs are:

LCD TV:

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) televisions are thinner and lighter and provide much sharper and clearer picture than CRTs of similar size. They are ideally used for cell phone displays, computer monitors, and to view still images. LCD TVs have a flat screen so there will be no picture distortion and don't have screen "burn in" like curved tube TVs. In general, LCD viewing angle is 175 degrees. The picture can be viewed 87 degrees from each side. LCD TVs are very economical to use and screens less than 35 are fairly inexpensive. LCD TVs are backlit and blocks outside light. So, they are suitable for natural lighting situations. Most LCD TVs have a half lifespan (50% of original brightness) of over 30,000 hours (16 years of viewing at 6 hours per day). LCD sizes generally range from 13 to 65 but some manufacturer will offer up to 100 sizes.

Plasma TV:

A Plasma Display Panel (PDP) is a flat panel display used in large TV displays. They have better and accurate color generation than LCDs, and with far display, wider viewing angles, and do not experience degradation at high angles compared to LCD. Plasma displays are ideal for viewing motion video in large displays.

· Plasma screen sizes generally ranges from 32 to 84 but some offer screen sizes up to 100.

HDTV:

HDTV or High-Definition Television is a digital television broadcasting system offering a higher resolution compared to regular television systems. HDTV is digitally broadcast unlike earlier analog broadcasting, because digital television (DTV) signals require reduced bandwidth because of digital video compression.

HDTV will not have standard TV problems, like low quality sharpness, troubles with brightness or contrast, spots, other visual, or audio imperfections, problems like double images (ghosting), and weak signals. HD television provides clearer pictures with excellent sound quality, a wider viewing screen and up-to-date scanning. HDTV will provide more and superior channels provided by regular satellite or cable television with theater system experience.

LED TV:

LED (Light Emitting Diode) TV is an LCD TV that uses LEDs for back lighting, instead of using the fluorescent lights (as it creates more black spots). They are ideally used for low-energy indicators, as substitutes for traditional light sources in general lighting and automotive lighting.
· LED TV currently costs more than a standard LCD or plasma TV.
· LED TV has got great looks and very easy to Install.
· Edge-lit LED television will consume 30-40% of less power than LCD or plasma TV. But backlit LEDs will consume more power.
· Brighter picture can be viewed with LED television compared to a standard LCD TV.
· LED TV that is backlit, with local dimming and RGB LEDs, will have an enhanced picture and better contrast ratio and colour accuracy compared to standard LCD TV.

OLED TVs:

OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) TVs depend on light emitting polymer technology. Its features including,
· In OLED TVs, there is no need for backlights or extra heaters or coolers, so there is less power consumption.
· As OLED materials has the capacity to support full spectrum of visible light, so there will be higher contrast and it has high-speed refresh rates.
· OLEDs are much faster than LCDs. Fast motion and quick eye movement pictures are more realistic. And OLED TVs will make virtual images to look realistic and can be viewed easily for longer periods.
· It has larger viewing angle and for near-eye applications, it provides more pleasant viewing without distortion.
One disadvantage with OLED TVs is the limited lifespan of the organic materials used in its manufacturing. In addition, blue light degrades quickly with a lifespan of 14,000 hours (when used 8 hours per day for five years) on flat-panel displays.

What is the Difference Between Plasma TV, LCD TV and LED TV?








Over the past decade home entertainment technology has really taken some huge leaps forward. Today, the task of buying a new TV is not just a matter of picking your favourite brand or buying the largest size you can afford. There seem to be more options than ever, and this has certainly led to a lot of confusion among consumers. With that in mind, what exactly are the main differences between the different types of TV, and which is the best?

Plasma TVs are one of the older types of flat screen. They are relatively cheap to produce meaning that prices are generally low for the screen size, which led to plasma becoming a popular choice with consumers who wanted to get the largest screen for their money. These TVs use a gas, which then turns into plasma when an electronic current is passed through it; the plasma then emits the light to create the pictures. This results in a high quality, realistic picture that doesn't suffer from motion blur. It also offers a particularly wide viewing angle.

However, plasma screens do tend to only have a lifespan of about 10-15 years and do use a relatively high amount of energy, which is now frowned upon as many consumers are trying to become more environmentally friendly. What is the Difference Between Plasma TV, LCD TV and LED TV?

LCD TVs can trace their roots back to computer monitors and were first introduced at around the same time as plasma TVs. These TVs use the same basic technology as your pocket calculator screen and are backlit with florescent light. They have a much longer lifespan than plasma screens, something in the region of 30+ years, and also use much less power. Traditionally LCD prices were higher than plasma, but as new manufacturing techniques have evolved the prices are now rapidly falling.

While LCD TVs are available in a wide range of sizes, they do offer the worst performance of all the flat screens though, not only do they have the lowest contrast level but they also have a slow refresh rate meaning that motion blur often occurs. The viewing angle is also much narrower than that of plasma TVs, which means that it can be difficult to find a location that offers a good view for everyone, especially in smaller rooms.

LED TVs are actually the next generation of LCD screens, as they are based on a similar technology but use LED backlighting instead of the florescent backlighting found in traditional LCD screens. The new backlighting technology means that they are able to deliver a much more dynamic picture quality, they also use significantly less power than even the most efficient LCD TVs. LED screens can be made to be extremely thin, so they offer consumers the ability to place the TV practically anywhere - indeed it is now commonplace to see TVs fastened to the wall in order to save floor space.

As this is still a relatively new development, LED screens do tend to be more expensive than their LCD counterparts. However as LED TVs become more widespread the cost of production is expected to drop significantly, which will be reflected through dramatically lower prices in-store. Having said that, LED technology is considered to be the most reliable of all the flat screen formats so many people don't mind paying a little bit more.

The world of home entertainment can certainly be a confusing place, especially as new advances in technology seem to come along on an almost monthly basis.
