LCD versus LED; How do these technologies compare and how do they overlap?
LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. Basically this is two panels of clear material (usually plastic) that have the liquid crystal compound sandwiched between the panels. The liquid crystal is what shows the picture produced by the video card.
A light behind this panel apparatus allows the image shown on the screen to be seen. The lights typically used are a variation of a fluorescent bulb or bulbs. There can be both side lit and back lit type models but most are lit from the side.
LCD Versus LED - What You Need to KnowLED stands for Light Emitting Diode; and it is nothing more than a type of light.
Technically, an LED display is also a LCD. So they are really the same thing. The difference though when you see an LED display is how the model is back-lit or illuminated. LED's can also be side lit or back-lit.
Back lighting type LED's are thought superior to side lit models as they can use what is called "local dimming".
The way local dimming works is because the image is illuminated from behind the screen by hundreds of tiny LED lights, where there are be shadows the LED's can turn on and off as well as dim in various amounts. Side lit LED's have a small advantage over a basic LCD but back lit LED's are better than side lit anything because of local dimming.
Essentially, LED back lighting allows for much deeper black levels and contrast because the LED's can independently switch on and off according to the shadows shown on the screen.
Again, an LED is still a LCD but with the inclusion of LED type back-lighting. If you want the best HDTV; get one with LED technology and local dimming. Make sure the model you are looking at has both.
A cheaper model LCD may not have LED technology but these basic HDTVs can still look really good. The black levels are generally not quite as good though. That' the main difference.
