In old days when we had CRT computer monitors and CRT television sets there was a clear distinction between these two devices. The basic principle to display the picture was the same but here the similarities ended. TV set had the antenna input and it was almost impossible to connect a computer to it. On the other hand it was not so easy to watch television on computer. As the technology advances we are getting not just new display types, recent TV sets and monitors have also many additional features and interfaces.
With digital broadcasting we have moved television closer to computers and internet. Computers can easily display video and audio clips or streams. This means that the border between computers and television is very soft. Maybe the best definition of the difference between computer monitor and TV is that monitor is primarily intended to display computer picture while TV set is designed to receive and display TV picture (and sound).
Computer Monitor
LCD Monitors Vs LCD TVsThe main purpose of computer monitor is to display computer picture. Monitor is one of the most important computer peripherals. Without it we can not do anything (unless we access it remotely by some other computer). Modern computer monitor displays are almost exclusively using LCD technology. This is a very cheap and effective way of displaying computer resolutions at display sizes that fit most working spaces. Computer resolutions are comparable to TV resolutions and can go even further. For example, resolution 2560x1600 is quite common with the biggest LCD monitors. LCD monitors have usually DVI interface to connect with the computer. This interface can also be used to display TV picture, we only need a DVI to HDMI interface. Many LCD monitors have also a built-in TV tuner. With this add-on you can watch TV without any additional hardware--you only need an antenna or cable connection and you are ready to watch TV channels.
LCD Television
The first difference we can observe is that the sizes of LCD televisions are usually bigger while the resolution is fixed to 1920x1080 in best case which corresponds to HDTV resolution. The other difference is the display technology used. Large televisions usually use plasma displays, while medium sized and small TV sets use LCDs. There are no significant differences between these two technologies. In the last years both technologies have evolved and both offer clear, sharp picture. However, there is one significant difference between monitors and TV sets. LCD and Plasma TVs, which are primarily designed to display TV picture, usually use advanced image processing algorithms for smooth motion and less flickering. LCD/plasma televisions also have many audio/video interfaces to connect with home theater and other equipment. The can also display computer picture via HDMI input.
